Civic engagement

Civic engagement

While attending to these other initiatives we identified a gap in civic participation in the African immigrant community. ANDI is focusing on civic engagement education program to concretize all the work it has been doing in the community with partners in order to improve the physical, economic cultural well being of the community. We organized two workshops last year in August and November for a diverse group of immigrants from the Twin Cities. A total of 60 participants attended the workshops. It is time to start a program that would be sustained through time and whose impact shall be renown in the community.

In 2008, in preparation for the election we carried out a focused conversation where we developed a plan of action for community organizing and political education.

Minnesota Cameroon Community MINCAM was  initiated by some members of the Cameroon community who were participants and this May 31st 2008. We intend to follow through the action plan by developing into economic empowerment later in 2009. Due to financial constraints this did not take off the ground We also hope to continue our civic engagement work with the community and the state in 2009.

We participated at a state policy redesign conference in October 14th 2009  where we raised the question of the state accommodating immigrants skills and talents to solve the problem of retiring baby boomers for example. Our concern for the immigrant community is that they should be able to contribute local economy by using their talents. Research on this issue has confirm the fact that the underutilization of immigrants skills is an imperative issue.

We remind hopeful that state will listen to our cry and establish a laision with the immigrant community to solve this issue and develop more inclusive policies for the state and for the common good
